“Ya’ll is some talented muthafuckas, basically,” Dr. Dre says of Ice Cube and “Straight Outta Compton” director F. Gary Gray.

During a talk prior to the world premiere of Straight Outta Compton at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles Monday (August 10), Ice Cube praised the work of F. Gary Gray, the film’s director.

“We’ve been doing this together since about 1991,” Ice Cube said while joined on stage with Gray, as well as N.W.A members Dr. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella. Straight Outta Compton focuses on the evolution of N.W.A and is due in theaters August 14.

“What’s a beautiful thing is, me and him, we never went to film school,” Cube continued regarding himself and Gray, who directed the video for Ice Cube’s 1992 single “It Was A Good Day.” “We never did anything like that. We just used our passion, our drive and our hood prowess to get us to this point.”

Dr. Dre then interrupted Cube.

“Ya’ll is some talented muthafuckas, basically,” Dre said.

After laughing, Ice Cube continued. “You a talented muthafucka, too, dog,” Ice Cube said. “But we just wanted to show everybody that you can do this. It’s all inspiration.”

Later in his speech, Ice Cube said that the impact of late Eazy-E, who died in 1995 due to complications from AIDS, resonates today.

“We up here because of Eazy-muthafuckin’-E,” Ice Cube said. “N.W.A was his vision in a lot of ways. We followed his lead in a lot of things as far as how we presented ourselves to the world. We’re proud of this night.”
