Nas is no stranger to performing his revered album with an orchestra. The veteran rhymer famously performed Illmatic with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in 2014.

In February 2018, PBS aired the concert on television as part of its Great Performances series. A few months later, Nas and Mass Appeal Records released an album version of the performance titled Illmatic: Live From The Kennedy Center.

Nas’ Illmatic has a unique connection to Detroit due to work of one of the city’s most acclaimed MCs. Former Slum Village member Elzhi dropped Elmatic, a tribute/remake of the celebrated album, in 2011. The project received rave reviews and earned a spot on HipHopDX’s Top 10 Mixtapes of 2011.
